City torchbearers have chance to relight their fire

THE Capital’s torchbearers are being given another chance to participate in events celebrating the
London Olympics.

An appeal has gone out to those who carried the Olympic flame across Edinburgh and the Lothians to join the Opening Ceremony Event in Festival Square on July 27. The event includes a torchbearer parade at 8.30pm, with performances from Jimi the Piper, the Ceilidhdonia ceilidh rock band and Pulse of the Place samba band.

There will also be an exclusive performance of Flower of Scotland by the Broomhouse Choir, which will be beamed to a global audience during the Games’ opening ceremony.

Councillor Steve Cardownie, festivals and events champion, said: “Having already played a starring role in the spectacular Olympic torch relay, I’m sure our torchbearers will jump at the chance to take centre stage once again.

“We have a great programme lined up for Festival Square, with events for all the family, and would encourage the people of Edinburgh to get behind the event and to celebrate the opening of the Olympic Games.”
