City students say unlimited tuition fees are 'disastrous'

STUDENTS in Edinburgh have condemned the findings of a review of university funding south of the Border as "disastrous".

Lord Browne published his report yesterday which recommended that universities in England and Wales should be able to charge unlimited fees.

Liz Rawlings, president of Edinburgh University Students' Association, said: "Browne's recommendations are disastrous for students in Scotland.

"Students are being asked to pay more to receive less, and Scottish universities will struggle to compete with their wealthier counterparts elsewhere in the UK.

"The lifting of the cap on tuition fees will devastate our higher education system.

"It will make university a privilege for the few who can afford it.

"This will create a two tier system, with students' attendance at elite institutions based on their bank balance, not their academic potential."
