City jeweller rings changes with new version of horseracing trophy

CITY jeweller Hamilton & Inches is creating a new version of what is thought to be one of the oldest pieces of sporting silverware in the world.

The firm is redesigning the Lanark Silver Bell horse racing trophy, which will be contested at Hamilton Park Racecourse on August 24.

The venue commissioned the jeweller to produce a new 21st century sterling silver version of the original bell, which is estimated to date back to 1165.

The trophy will be entirely hand-made and take six months to complete, comprising 100 per cent sterling silver and featuring an 11-inch diameter base with stylised rail supports and replicated shields of former winners. It has both a Scottish and a Diamond Jubilee year hallmark.

“As the Lanark Silver Bell is one of the oldest racing trophies in Britain, we felt it was essential to incorporate some of the original features of this historic trophy.”
