City hunts for contractor to build homes

CITY chiefs are to launch the search for a contractor to develop two new housing sites.

Hundreds of homes are to be built across Pennywell/Muirhouse and North Sighthill, including new council houses.

And Mark Turley, director of the city council's services for communities department, will ask councillors to approve the procurement strategy for the two sites at a meeting next week. Cruden Homes was previously selected to develop the Gracemount site, also part of the council's "21st Century Homes" project.

Mr Turley said: "Cruden Homes (East) Ltd were appointed as preferred bidder on June 28, 2010. A fixed price has been agreed and the development agreement has been signed."

The council has drawn up a "risk management" plan for the 21st Century Homes project. Mr Turley said: "Uncertainty around the current market conditions may impact on private sales, land values and the ability of private developers to raise finance. All of these could impact on the cost of the programme as the model is based on an element of cross-subsidy from the sale of the private homes."
