City gallery's art 'mislaid'

Gallery bosses have admitted nine paintings have been "mislaid" during the £18 million revamp of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

The works, described as "significant", are not officially classed as missing because they are believed to be somewhere in storage. There is no suggestion they have been stolen.

The National Galleries of Scotland said the paintings - among 118,646 items removed during the revamp - were "currently recorded on our database with locations that checks have revealed to be either inaccurate or out of date".
