Church plays up to celebrate anniversary

A NEW musical celebrating the 150th anniversary of an Edinburgh church is to be performed by its congregation.

Peter! marks the opening of St Peter's Episcopal Church in Lutton Place and tells the story of its patron saint.

The play features performances by actors and singers from within the congregation, as well as St Peter's Singing Club, a community music initiative for children.

Karen Docwra, who has written the drama, said: "Peter! is a community project which is bringing together a wide range of individuals.

"It tries to reflect what it might really have felt like to be in those situations over 2,000 years ago.

"Some of the staging has been a challenge, not least trying to illustrate people walking on water.

"We hope it will be a fitting celebration of the life of the most passionate of Jesus's disciples."

The musical will take place in the church on 20 June at 5pm. Admission is free but there will be a collection for the Grassmarket Mission.
