Children's lack of exercise blamed on worried parents

Parents' fear of letting their children go out to play has contributed to a lack of exercise among Scottish youngsters, a child development expert has claimed.

Author Sue Palmer, speaking yesterday as a campaign to increase physical activity got under way, said outdoor play was a key part of children's personal development, yet had been curbed by rising fear over the past 20 years.

The "Take Life On" campaign, launched by public health minister Shona Robison, is aimed at highlighting the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise for children, and tackling obesity.

Ms Palmer, chairwoman of the Scottish Play Policy Forum, said: "Over the last 20 years, we've got frightened of letting our children out to play.

"Play is as essential for youngsters' healthy development as food or sleep. That doesn't mean playing on a computer game. For children of about four and upwards, it means outdoor play with other children."
