Children’s Hearts song axed over fan abuse

STUNNED Hearts bosses have been forced to pull a recording of the club’s terrace anthem by young fans from their Facebook page after attracting a string of “shameful comments”.

The classic Hearts Song had been recorded by five members of the Big Hearts Music Project and is to be played at the League Cup final against St Mirren this Sunday.

And while the song is still available on the Hearts website - where the comments have been switched off - the club removed its post from Facebook after the reaction it received to the track was “absolutely shocking”.

A Hearts statement said: “If it’s not to your taste then fine, but there’s no need to comment on it with foul language and completely slag off something that was done by kids, who are the future lifeblood of this club.

“We’re shocked and appalled at the reaction to something that children, and others, gave up their time to do in order to help the club meet its obligations for Sunday’s Final.”

Hearts fans flocked to the club’s Facebook page to back the club’s stance. One supporter, Lee Purves, wrote: “If knocking the efforts of kids floats your boat then I genuinely feel sorry for you.”

The club, which runs weekly music courses for budding fans, decided on the cup final tribute after being urged to record a song by bosses at the Scottish Communities League Cup.

Band members include Scott King, 15, from Mayfield; Zoe McEwen, 11, from Kirknewton; Finlay Mcintyre, 12, from Tynecastle; Hugh Patterson, 11, from Balerno and Glenn Russell, 13, also from Balerno.

The song was recorded at Tynecastle Stadium’s music suite under the watchful eye of producer and project coordinator Keir MacCulloch.

Ben Craigie-Sharland, development manager for the Big Hearts Community Trust, said: “We only decided to go for it around four weeks ago and the kids have been brilliant. The whole thing was reworked, practised and recorded over the space of just four nights. It’s a bit of fun but everyone’s really happy with it.”

The kids involved all attend weekly classes within Tynecastle at which they are taught various musical instruments at a cost of just £3.

Scott King’s parents, Andy and Kim, believe the project is “a fantastic initiative” by the club.

Dad Andy said: “We’ve got our tickets for the final this weekend and it will be fantastic to hear the song being played at Hampden and for Hearts to win, of course.”

A Hearts win on Sunday will see a victory parade through the Capital to allow fans a chance to celebrate with their heroes.

CUP FINAL FUN

The Evening News last year recorded our very own song and video to mark the first all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup final in 116 years.

Go East by the Paper Shop Boys – a spoof reworking of the Pet Shop Boys’ 1993 hit Go West featuring everything from trams to pandas – amassed more than 120,000 hits on YouTube in ten days. The News later scooped an innovation award for our work on the Final and song.
