Children get set for reading experience that is out of this world

LOCAL children are being invited to let their imaginations blast off this summer with the Space Hop reading challenge.

Intergalactic adventures, little green aliens and experiences that are out of this world await children who boldly go to their local library and join the challenge.

Libraries across Midlothian have lined up a range of space-themed books for children to choose from, including Doctor Who, the Astrosaurs, Gunk Aliens and many more.

The challenge is aimed at 4-12-year-olds, who will each receive a Space Hop poster when they register. It is completed by reading six books and after each book is read, children will receive a sticker to be added to their poster.

Children who successfully complete the challenge will win a medal, a certificate and a free swimming voucher for Midlothian leisure centres. They will also have their name entered into a prize draw to win a space science kit or 3D solar system.

Cllr Peter Boyes, cabinet member for education & communities, said: "Parents know how important it is for children to continue their reading skills over the school holidays. Our summer reading challenge is a fun way to help encourage this.

"The space theme gives children lots of scope to develop their imagination - and our library staff are always happy to help children find something enjoyable to read."
