Chief critical of plant plans

ENVIRONMENTALISTS have accused developers of plans for a biomass plant in Leith of "greenwash".

Friends of the Earth Scotland said correspondence between American forestry groups and Forth Energy had undermined the company's claims about the plant's green credentials.

Forth Energy says the biomass plant will only use wood from sustainable sources and will create clean energy for much of the Capital's population.

But Stan Blackley, the new chief executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: "The plans would place a huge demand on already stretched American forests and be an incredibly inefficient means of producing energy".
