Charity fund is just super

SUPERMARKET chain Waitrose is celebrating the second anniversary of a community fund that has given £48,000 to good causes in the Capital.

The Community Matters scheme donates 1000 a month to local charities nominated in the chain's two Edinburgh stores. Staff are invited to choose three different causes for each donation, and shoppers are given tokens which they can then "post" into boxes in store to vote for their favourite. The 1000 is then donated in proportion to the votes cast.

Recent beneficiaries have included Drum Riding For The Disabled Centre, the Sick Kids Hospital, and Lothian Talking Newspaper.

Branch manager at Waitrose Morningside, Paul Soane, said: "It's great to be part of an initiative that helps good causes on our doorstep."
