Det Superintendent Derek Robertson, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: "The pictures capture exactly how Zoe looked on the day she went missing. She had these clothes on when she left the house – grey jogging bottoms, a white long-sleeved T-shirt and black and pink Nike trainers.

"We have also had a confirmed sighting of her in Cambusnethan Street, walking towards the Cambusnethan area, at about 5:40pm on Saturday."

He added: "These little bits of information are essential to our inquiry. They allow us to piece together her movements and will ultimately establish what happened to her and lead to us catching her killer."

Zoe was seen by her mother leaving her home in Newmains at about 5pm on Saturday.

Local residents reported seeing a fire at 11:20pm in an area known as the Monkey Hill, where the body of the Motherwell College student was discovered by a passer-by on Sunday afternoon.

Tributes have been left near the spot where Zoe's body was discovered.

Extra officers have been drafted to help with the investigation and are trawling through CCTV footage to glean more information.

Detectives yesterday said they hoped to set up a Bebo site to persuade young people to contact them with information, while posters appealing for information will be placed in high-profile spots around the area to encourage the public to contact police.

DS Robertson said: "We know Zoe was a big user of the Bebo site. We know she has got tributes on her Bebo site.

"We've said to the young people we're going to try and set up a Bebo site for any comment or any information whatsoever. They want to engage in different ways with us, hence the reason the text message system has been put out there.

"They don't have to leave their details, just tell us some information.

"It's most important we capture that one piece of information that might break this case."

He added: "Somebody in this community must know something. I think people are maybe thinking, 'That's not important', but just tell us about it and let us be the judge of that."

Zoe's mother Marianne, stepfather Daniel and sisters Laura Ann and Ashley said they were "shattered" by the student's death.

Mr Robertson added: "I've spoken to Zoe's mother and I've told her I will do everything possible to find this person and bring them into custody as soon as possible."

The officer said that more than 60 officers were involved in the inquiry.
