Cash boost for mining towns

Former mining communities in the Lothians are set to share in £1.6 million of funding announced today.

The Scottish Government agreed to come up with the cash after the Coalfields Regeneration Trust submitted a business proposal outlining plans for investment in some of the country's most deprived areas.

The money is expected to benefit community groups across the coalfield areas and help hundreds of people gain skills and find employment.

Communities Minister Alex Neil said: "Much more needs to be done to address problems associated with poverty and deprivation in some of our communities.

"This funding will be focused on inspiring local enterprise, tackling the causes of poverty and helping people get access to employment."
