Case study: 'It's the only job I've ever thought about doing'

FOR Lynette Beaton, a career in teaching was about more than long holidays and money.

The 20-year-old from Gourock is studying to become a music teacher in Glasgow.

She said: "I knew teaching was the job for me, even when I was at primary school.

"It's the only job I've ever thought about doing. It's a great way to help children, and a good use of my skills too.

"Personally, I've never considered the pay as a reason for being a teacher, for me the important part is helping people."

Ms Beaton is now in her third year and is still as passionate about her chosen vocation.

She said: "Of course, the holidays and the pay are a bonus, but people often don't realise how difficult the job is. The holidays are much needed. I enjoy secondary teaching, and although work placement was a big step, it was a new and exciting one.

"It is interesting to work with children from all different backgrounds and feel like you are making a difference to their lives."

In the future Ms Beaton hopes to support pupils, not just with academic work, but with personal issues too.

"I've always felt the guidance element of teaching is a vital part of the job," she said. "And hopefully at some point in my future career I could move towards focusing on guidance."
