Case study: ‘After I was told I had cancer I just couldn’t go back to work’

ANNE Ashcroft, 46, from Glasgow, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009.

She said she ran into financial difficulties almost immediately.

She said: “After I was told I had cancer I just couldn’t go back to work.

“I was in complete shock and would have been useless.

“I had worked all my life and never claimed benefits before but I needed help.

“If I had had to wait six months to access support I would have been in real trouble.

“As it was we were forced to sell our house because we couldn’t keep up with the mortgage payments.”
