Case against murder accused 'compelling'

A PROSECUTOR yesterday urged a jury to convict Khalid Sarwar of murdering a radio agony aunt in her home.

Sarwar, 29, denies murdering Awas FM presenter Nasim Jamil, 54, at her flat in Byres Road, Glasgow, on 9 December last year.

Yesterday at the High Court in Glasgow, in her closing speech to the jury, advocate depute Dorothy Bain, QC, said the case against Sarwar was circumstantial, but compelling.

She told the court: "In this case, the Crown position is that there is no room for anything other than a conviction for the crime of murder, when you have regard to the nature of the attack and the terrible injuries suffered by Mrs Jamil.

"She was - quite simply - bludgeoned to death.

"She was the victim of a brutal and sustained attack. It may not ever be possible to absolutely identify the motive for this terrible crime. Part of the motivation must have been financial."

The court heard that Mrs Jamil was battered 55 times around the head with a hammer and was also stabbed dozens of times with the end of a screwdriver or the tip of a blunt knife on the face stomach and legs.

Today, defence QC Donald Findlay is expected to make his speech to the jury.
