Carol concert raises £22k for Sick Kids

EDINBURGH'S Sick Kids hospital's Carols for Christmas service raised a final total of more than £22,000.

The event, which took place last month, was nearly disrupted by snow, with a choir and several readers having to cancel at the last minute but the service went ahead at St Cuthbert's Church regardless. A spokesman said: "Many thanks to everyone that managed to brave the elements and to make it. We're pleased to announce that over 22,000 was raised on the night."

Eatery on the menu for bank

A FORMER Bank of Scotland branch on Chambers Street looks set to be turned into a Nando's restaurant.

Plans to create the eatery are due to be considered by the council next week, and have been recommended for approval.

Nando's already has restaurants in Lothian Road and Fountain Park.

Club plans Oz flood event

A CITY nightclub is hosting a special fundraising event to raise money for the victims of the Australian floods.

Cabaret Voltaire, on Blair Street, is holding the Australia Day event on January 26.

DJs from several of the venue's regular club nights will be getting together for the fundraiser.

Save the date for wedding exhibition

A WEDDING open day will take place next Sunday at The Hub on the Royal Mile to help couples to plan their dream wedding.

Running from 11am to 4pm, couples can meet wedding planners over a glass of champagne and work towards planning their big day.

There is the chance to enter a prize draw for champagne and canaps if visitors book within a month of the open day.

MP welcomes detention change

EDINBURGH West Liberal Democrat MP Mike Crockart has welcomed the announcement that the power to detain terror suspects pre-trial for 28 days would lapse from today. He said it went some way towards redressing the erosion of civil liberties under the previous government.

City team get set to face Postcode Challenge

A TEAM from Edinburgh will appear on STV's Postcode Challenge on Friday hoping to scoop the 25,000 jackpot.

Paul Diamond, Matt McGuirk, Catherine Grevers and Sarah Snell, who are friends from the local pub quiz, will go head to head with a team from Ardersier near Inverness. If they win, they will donate 500 to the Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

The competing teams are tested on their general knowledge in two rounds, and answer postcode-related survey questions.
