Capital's top innovators honoured

Three Edinburgh innovators have been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Revolutionary speech graphics software and a cattle tracking system were named as Edinburgh's best innovations at the national John Logie Baird Awards last night.

The awards honoured Michael Berger, 40, and Dr Gregor Hofer, 31, of Speech Graphics, which emerged from the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics.

Speech Graphics combine expertise in speech technology and computer animation to produce high-quality, high-value lip synchronisation for the video games industry.

Andy Murray, 24, of Blantyre Terrace, was given the award for Young Innovator. He designed and manufactured Sea Defence, a range of furniture that uses vacuum pressing techniques to bend wood to create coffee tables, wall mounted shelves and lights in unique sculptural forms.

IceRobotics Ltd, based in South Queensferry, was honoured for its unique cattle monitoring computer system.
