Capital's public speakers are the talk of the town

Edinburgh's public speaking talent was awarded at the National Conference of the Association of Speakers Clubs.

The event, which took place at Edinburgh's Marriot Hotel earlier this month, acknowledged the skills of the Edinburgh Speakers Club in all three awards categories.

Thomas Scott was the winner of the National Speech Contest and a finalist in Speech Evaluation, while Ian Methven was a finalist in the Topics category, which features impromptu speaking. Thomas competed against seven other nominees to clinch the contest title with his heartfelt speech on homelessness, "The Seldom Seen Kid", which he had performed at colleges and homeless centres throughout the UK. He has won the same award in the 2008 ceremony in Blackpool.

The Edinburgh club has three national prize winners among its members and has produced a national finalist every year since its inception in 2008.
