Capital’s Christmas off to a fiery start

EDINBURGH’S Christmas celebrations got under way in spectacular style last night, as the city centre was lit up by a dazzling display of fireworks.

The event opened on George Street with a light projection display and entertainers who then led revellers to the Mound for the lighting of the Norwegian Christmas tree.

Celebrations continued with pipers leading the crowd to St Andrew Square for a dance and music show.

One of the highlights of the celebrations was the Snow Queen, a 40ft-high figure that towered over The Mound, sending sparks flying into the night sky.

Despite the high winds, the organisers decided to allow the fireworks display to go ahead as planned, though in a slightly curtailed form.

Yesterday also saw the opening of the annual ice rink in East Princes Street Gardens, along with the iconic Edinburgh wheel and the Christmas fair, which will run until 4 January.

The controversial tram works under way in the heart of the city have been suspended until the start of next year to allow for Christmas and New Year cele-brations, in a move designed to encourage people back into the city centre during the festive period.

Machines have been moved and barrier fencing taken down to allow greater access to Princes Street.
