"Edinburgh is a city for anyone and everyone. We are extremely pleased to be viewed as one of Expedia customers' favourite cities and will continue to strive to retain this prestigious ranking."

Among the various travellers' views were descriptions of the city as "exciting" and "historical" while visits to Mary King's Close, Edinburgh Castle and The Royal Yacht Britannia were highly recommended.

Ben Carter, VisitScotland's area director for Edinburgh and Lothians, said: "To be rated among some of the best destinations in the world is a fantastic achievement for the city and a clear demonstration of the fantastic quality and diversity of tourism products we have on offer here."
