Capital makes top ten of UK cultural cities

EDINBURGH may be home to the world's biggest arts festival, but it is still only the eighth "most cultural" place in the UK, according to a new survey.

Listings website locallife.co.uk found that the Capital has 5.07 art galleries, bookshops, museums, theatres, dance and drama schools, film venues, music studios, opera, ballet, arts and crafts shops and musical instrument retailers for every 10,000 residents.

Norwich finished in first place, with a score of 10.96 per 10,000 residents. Liverpool – the current European Capital of Culture – ranked 124th in the UK.

Tony Martin, chairman of locallife.co.uk, said Edinburgh residents enjoyed a "wealth of cultural events and venues".

He added: "While Liverpool is a wonderfully vibrant city, when it comes to the blend of music, dance, theatre, film and literature, Edinburgh is streets ahead."

Glasgow was 66th, with a score of 3.87, while the Isle of Man was the country's biggest cultural desert, with just 0.27 cultural pursuits per 10,000 residents.
