Capital hosts series of events to celebrate historic Bardic dynasty

The history and literary heritage of Scotland's longest-lived Bardic dynasty is to be celebrated at an event taking place in the Capital.

Final bookings are now being taken for a symposium on the MacMhuirichs taking place in the Royal Scots Club this Saturday.

It will be led by Professor Hugh Cheape and is part of a weekend of celebrations dedicated to one of Scotland's greatest bards, Lachlan Mr MacMhuirich, who lived from 1370 until 1438.

The MacMhuirichs, a name later anglicized to Currie, served for over 700 years as professional poets to the Lords of the Isles, and later to the MacDonalds of Clanranald.

The events begin with the installation of a commemorative stone in the Makars' Court of the Scottish Writers' Museum on Friday. A dinner and evening of traditional music will then follow the installation of the Makar's Stone.

Following Saturday's symposium, there will be a cruise to Inchcolm Abbey, the 12th-century abbey on Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth.

Robert Currie, president of the Clan Currie Society in New York, said: "It is going to be a great weekend for everyone interested in Gaelic heritage."
