Calum's on cloud nine after winning his pilot's wings

AN Edinburgh student is celebrating after being awarded his pilot's wings.

Calum Macintosh, of Braid Farm Road, Morningside, who has just celebrated his 21st birthday, was recently awarded his pilot's wings at Borders Gliding Club, near Wooler, after just 30 brief instructional flights in a glider.

He was trained on the club's dual control gliders, an Alliance 34 and an ASK 21. He then completed his first solo flight in the Alliance glider.

The keen fan of model planes was declared "a natural" by instructors amazed at how quickly he mastered the different techniques of controlling the glider.

Calum, a former student of South Morningside Primary and Boroughmuir High School who lives with his parents in Braid Farm Road, is waiting to start an engineering degree at Heriot-Watt University and hopes to pursue a career in aviation as a pilot or flight engineer.
