It is believed that a member of the public found the body near the bottom of the city landmark and alerted the emergency services.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police in Edinburgh were called to Calton Hill at around 4.30am after the body of a woman was found on a footpath off Waverley Place. The death is thought to be non-suspicious and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Traffic diversions were put in place while staff at nearby offices were allowed through. The cordon was lifted at around 10.15am.
