Calls for city to land more air routes

POLITICIANS are calling for direct flights from Edinburgh to countries with emerging economies.

They believe the sale of the Capital’s airport makes now the right time to investigate potential links with the likes of China, Brazil, India and Russia.

Opposition parties have called on the Scottish Government to act to help create direct flights, believing there should be a strategic review and the establishment of a marketing fund to help support such routes.

Elaine Murray, Labour’s transport spokeswoman, said: “Emerging economies like Brazil, Russia, India and China are going to be tomorrow’s powerhouse economies, and so we need to get in early.

“With the sale of Edinburgh Airport going through, this is an ideal time to act.

“There is real scope to help airports and airlines expand their destination list.”
