Call to stop deal rumours

LABOUR has demanded an end to speculation over the contract to build two new aircraft carriers after reports the UK government was ready to co-operate with France to cut costs.

Thousands of jobs in Rosyth and Glasgow depend on the 5.2 billion order for the carriers. Work has started, but the need to cut spending has raised fears about the contract.

Shadow Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy said: "Anonymous briefing to newspapers that thousands of jobs are at stake is really unsettling."
