Bus inquiry 'won't affect city services'

CITY leaders have vowed to ensure that a Competition Commission inquiry into bus services does not have a detrimental impact on Edinburgh.

The Office of Fair Trading said its study uncovered evidence of "limited competition" between companies across the UK and referred the matter to the CC.

Councillor Gordon Mackenzie, the city's transport leader, insists there are no "serious failings" in Edinburgh's bus market and said the "vast majority" of residents are well served by a number of operators. He also said that Lothian Buses charges lower fares, has a more modern fleet and provides a more comprehensive range of services than any other local bus market outside London.

In a motion to go before councillors next week, Cllr Mackenzie said: "Council agrees to work with bus operators and stakeholders to ensure the final report by the Competition Commission promotes the integration and increased usage of public transport."
