Burst pipe sparks city disruption

HUNDREDS of homes were left without water yesterday and traffic was disrupted after a city centre water main burst.

Properties in parts of Glasgow were affected by the leak at the junction of Gordon Street and Union Street, yards from Central Station.

Scottish Water said some customers in postcode areas including G41, G42, G43 and G44 may have experienced loss of supply, low pressure or discoloured tapwater.

The utility, which apologised to those affected, said its engineers had been working “round the clock” to fix the problem after the burst in the early hours yesterday.

It said all affected householders have had their supply restored. Officials said a much smaller number of customers had been affected than first feared.

A spokeswoman said: “Scottish Water is continuing to carry out repairs to a burst water main in the city centre.

“Thanks to the expertise and quick actions of our engineers to redistribute the network, a much smaller number of customers have been affected than potentially could have been.”

Traffic restrictions were put in place near Central Station while Scottish Water tackled the incident.

The spokeswoman added: “We are advising road users that a road closure is in place along the section of Gordon Street that runs in front of Central Station.

“This closure will remain until this vital repair work and reinstatement of the road is complete. Motorists can still access Union Street via Renfield Street and turn left onto Gordon Street.”
