Burma election ban for Suu Kyi

Burma's detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is officially barred from voting in November elections, according to electoral rolls posted yesterday that left her name off the list of eligible voters.

The junta has enacted several laws that effectively ban the Nobel Peace Prize laureate from voting. But the arrival of electoral rolls made it official. The election will be Burma's first general vote since 1990, when Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won a landslide victory. The junta ignored the results and has kept Suu Kyi detained for 15 of the past 21 years.
