Brutal killer of teenager attacked by prisoner

The ringleader of a gang convicted of abducting and murdering a teenager in a race-hate attack has been assaulted in prison.

Imran Shahid, 34, was jailed in November 2006, with his brother Zeeshan Shahid and Mohammed Mushtaq for the murder of 15-year-old Kriss Donald, who was stabbed 13 times and set on fire while still alive.

The schoolboy was kidnapped while walking with a friend near his home in Pollokshields, Glasgow, in March 2004. He was set on fire on a Clydeside walkway behind Celtic FC’s training ground in the east end of the city.

The three men fled to Pakistan but were extradited following political intervention.

Shahid, serving a minimum of 25 years, was attacked on Monday night by another prisoner at Saughton jail in Edinburgh. He is understood to have sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment. He is understood to have been moved to the jail recently, from Shotts Prison, North Lanarkshire.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Prison Service said: “We can confirm an incident took place yesterday evening at Edinburgh. Those involved were treated locally and no one was taken to hospital.”

Zeeshan Shahid, who was 28 at the time of conviction, was sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison, and Mushtaq, who was 27 at the time, must spend 22 years behind bars before being able to apply for parole.
