A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in San Antonio, Ibiza on July 29. Consular assistance is being provided to the family."

McCaughey, who is understood to be in his early 20s, was taken to the Can Misses hospital shortly after 8am on Friday.

It is not clear what led to his fall on the island's west coast.

His death follows that of 20-year-old Jodie Nieman from Croydon, south London, who suffered a heart attack after a night at the popular Space nightclub.

Local police said that her death was "almost certainly" drug-related while a hospital spokesman confirmed that her group of female friends had taken ecstasy during the evening.
