Bright idea for supermarket

SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury's is to erect giant orange logos on the roof of its Craigleith store, which is currently being extended.

The two illuminated signs, of the chain's distinctive orange logo, will be on the roof above the main entrance of the store and on the west of the site, at Craigleith Retail Park.

A third "sky sign" was also to be erected on the south of the site but it attracted objections from residents concerned about the impact on nearby housing.

Councillors will make a decision on the plans tomorrow, although planning officials have recommended that the scheme gets the go-ahead.

John Bury, the city council's head of planning, said: "The retail park is characterised by signs and adverts. In this context, the signs will not have a detrimental impact on visual amenity and are acceptable."
