Brewing up more homes

THE last brewing site in Holyrood is to be transformed into the area's newest residential development.

The former Scottish &Newcastle site at Sugarhouse Close has been bought by Welsh developer Watkin Jones.

The firm hopes to create student accommodation, flats and an aparthotel on the one-acre site.

It has been used for brewing since 1828 and was most recently used as an experimental brewery. It is still home to an abandoned malt barn, kilns and brew house.

Andrew Wilmot, of architects Oberlanders, said: "The idea is to retain as many of the old brewery buildings as possible, particularly those that are listed. We are looking at ways to open up the site and create routes through to the other closes in the area."
