Local authorities fear the image will heap embarrassment on Brechin and put people off from visiting.

The picture shows a young Simba with his father Mufasa, looking into the distance from a cliff as he asks: “What’s the dark, shadowy place in the distance?”

Mufasa replies: “That’s Brechin Simba, you must never go there.”

Though the origin of the image is unknown, it has already circulated widely on Twitter and Facebook.

Though councillors accepted that the image was humorous, they said it could still give people from outside the town the wrong impression.

Convener Grahame Lockhart, who received the picture via email, said: “I was concerned this was the perception of people outside Brechin.”

Councillor Mairi Evans said: It’s not somethign I’d be looiking to post on my Facebook or Twitter account.

“It might be a bit of a joke - but people not from here are unlikely to get it.”

A statement from Brechin community council read: “Simba ended up in the dark place and found the residents full of joy. That’s an aspiration we can achieve.”
