Breastfeeding rates above Scots average

MORE new mothers in the Lothians are breastfeeding than almost anywhere else in Scotland, it has been revealed.

Nearly half of women with a baby exclusively use breast milk, with only Shetland health board having a higher proportion.

It is a boost for health chiefs who have invested a lot of time and money in encouraging women from all backgrounds to breastfeed where possible.

It also sets a good foundation for the future health of Lothians residents, with numerous studies showing the benefits of breastfeeding for both children and mother.

Not only does it increase the bond between infant and mother, but it can help protect against many childhood infections, improves brain development and reduce the likelihood of obesity in later life.

Isobel Gardiner, clinical manager for community midwifery and outpatient services at NHS Lothian, said: "It's fantastic that our efforts to support women in making breastfeeding the first choice is paying off.

"We know that breastfeeding gives babies the best start in life, and we are committed to providing the support that women need to help them breastfeed their babies."
