Breast best in Lothians

BREAST feeding rates in the Lothians continue to be among the highest in the UK, figures have shown.

More than a third of mothers are exclusively feeding their young naturally, well above the national average of 26 per cent.

This has improved despite a rise in the number of births to almost the 10,000-a-year mark, and health chiefs in Edinburgh have their own target of getting around half of all mothers breastfeeding, which is said to improve the bond between a woman and her child, and provide a raft of health benefits.
