Brazil: Police take slums off drug traffickers

Rio de Janeiro authorities said police faced no resistance yesterday in an operation to take control of nine slums commanded by drug traffickers.

Using dozens of armoured vehicles, a helicopter and nearly 1,000 men on the ground, police took control of the slums in less than two hours, without any exchange of gunshots.
