Brass band rescues injured woman from Ben Nevis

Four musicians helped the stricken woman down off Ben Nevis after coming across her during a challenge to walk to the top of Britain’s three highest mountains.

The Three Peaks Brass Band found the young walker, who was in jeans and trainers, on Saturday evening.

She had injured her knee on the 4409-feet high mountain and was on her own without water, food and extra clothing, band members said.

The band was undertaking an attempt to reach the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike in England and Snowden in Wales.

They completed the challenge, which involved performing on the top of each peak, in 24 hours.

The effort was in aid of the MS Society and has so far raised over £15,000.

Ten members of East London Brass joined 20 players from brass bands across the UK to complete the three peaks challenge with a difference.

The Three Peaks Brass Band saw participants carry over 100 kilograms of brass to the highest peaks in the UK, where the national song of each country was played.

Flower of Scotland was performed at the summit of Ben Nevis, Jerusalem featured at Scafell Pike and Land of my Fathers was played at Snowdon.

Conductor of East London Brass, Jayne Murrill, 40, described the experience as “amazing and horrendous at the same time.”

She said she was struck by the camaraderie in the group, even though some of them had just met for the first time.

“I got my trombone up Ben Nevis but there’s no way I could’ve carried it up the other ones,” she said.

“Between us we got everything up and down. It was a real group effort.”
