Brain can struggle to tell sexes apart, suggests study

FACES can appear male or female depending on where they are seen, a study has shown.

Facial features might be judged male when they occupy one area of a person's field of view, and female in another. The surprising discovery is believed to be the result of "sampling bias" in the brain.

In the real world the effect is not noticed because there are so many other gender clues, such as hair and clothing.

"It's the kind of thing you would not predict," said study leader Dr Arash Afraz, from MIT in Boston, USA.
