A Central Scotland Police spokeswoman said he had been transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

She added: "His condition there is said to be critical. Inquiries are ongoing, but it is currently being treated as an accident."

Fellow pupils posted messages of support for the boy on Facebook last night.

Sam Ovens, leader of Clackmannanshire Council, said: "The school is offering support to anyone affected."

Lornshill Academy's new building opened in August 2009. It is described as being designed to provide "an innovative forward vision for the school".
