Borders Railway moves step closer

WORK on the Borders Railway has moved a step closer after a contractor was appointed to start ground and structural investigations.

Borders Council has appointed Soil Mechanics to carry out four months of investigations for firms interested in bidding to build the rail project.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "I am pleased to see this appointment which will assist bidders to fully assess the work required in the construction of this valuable rail link. By bringing rail services back to the Borders line 40 years after it closed, we are demonstrating this Scottish Government's commitment to the Borders Railway.

"When finished, the railway will act as a catalyst for economic growth right across southern Scotland, supporting hundreds of jobs during its construction. It will also increase business development and housing opportunities."
