Body found in search for Edinburgh student

Police searching for a an Edinburgh University student who disappeared on a night out found a body today, a force spokeswoman said.

A major search was mounted for Duncan Gibbon who vanished around midnight on Saturday in freezing conditions.

A body has since been discovered on an embankment in Newcastle's Quayside area, near to where the 21-year-old was last seen.

He was celebrating a friend's 21st in Newcastle city centre when he got separated from two groups.

The student, from Northallerton, North Yorkshire, was not reported missing until Sunday as each group believed he was with the other.

Mr Gibbon's parents, Simon and Kate, and younger brother Jake, 19,

spoke to a local newspaper prior to today's find pleading for his safe return.
