'Block directories' offer alternative advert

NEW permanent "block directories" have been erected on Rose Street in a bid to help businesses that are angry about the ban on A-boards.

Seven large signs were already in place along Rose Street advertising individual businesses.

Essential Edinburgh – the company that manages the business improvement district that includes Rose Street – negotiated control of the signs then designed and installed the new directories in their place.

Every businesses will be listed on every sign,organised by categories, including shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, department stores, hotels, banks and building societies, offices and health clubs.

They are also colour coded to make them clear and easy to read.

Tom Campbell, chief executive of Essential Edinburgh, said: "As a company we work hard to support our stakeholder businesses and to improve their trading environment.
