Blind and deaf teaching centre saved

A CENTRE which trains teachers for deaf and blind children has been saved from closure.

The Scottish Sensory Centre, based at Edinburgh University, was under threat after losing Scottish Government funding.

But First Minister Alex Salmond agreed to convene a meeting on the way forward.

And now the government has agreed to provide 150,000 and the university will find 50,000 to keep the centre open for a further 12 months.

Its longer-term funding will be considered as part of a review of learning provision for children and young people with complex needs, which is currently under way.
