Billy clocks on at Caley

the Caledonian Hotel’s longest-serving employee is to unveil the former Princes Street train station clock, which has been restored for the hotel’s new look.

Billy Garioch, a porter who joined the hotel aged 15 in 1963, will join Tourism Minister Fergus Ewing on Wednesday at the former Hilton, now a Waldorf Astoria after a
£24 million refurbishment.

The clock survived a fire in 1892 and was set five minutes ahead in order that passengers were less likely to miss their trains, a tradition that is now set to continue.
