The driver of the van escaped unhurt but the green Kawasaki motorcycle was badly damaged and left partly trapped underneath.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said a 29-year-old man had been charged in connection with the incident.

A Scottish Ambulance spokeswoman said: "An ambulance crew took the man to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he is being treated for head injuries. The van driver was not hurt in the accident and did not need attention."
