Big Paolozzi mural poised for go-ahead

PLANS to create a mural based on Eduardo Paolozzi's work in the playground of his old school look set to get the go-ahead.

Leith Walk Primary School is planning its first major celebration of the artist, who attended the school in the 1920s, with a massive painting on the back wall of a neighbouring two-storey building.

The mural will look similar to one of Paolozzi's famous colourful collages, on a massive scale, with geometric shapes and images drawn from fashion magazines.

City council planning officials have recommended that the proposal, for the building at 77 Montgomery Street, gets the go-ahead and councillors on the development management committee were expected to give the go-ahead today.

John Bury, the city council's head of planning, said the mural "will add an interesting and artistic element to the rear elevation".
