The Store in Stockbridge is one of the best places in Edinburgh to buy your meat – from Gressingham duck to organic chicken and cuts of prime vacuum-packed Aberdeen Angus – and sauces. Especially good is the Aberdeen Angus lasagne and the smoked salmon pat.

PARDOVAN FARM, 15a Pardovan Holdings, Linlithgow, West Lothian, 01506 834470 www.farmshop.uk.com

On the road to Bo'ness, this is a real treat. The friendly management and extensive range of ginormous local veg and home baking are enticing – steak pies are exceptional, with their generous portions of meat and flaky pasty as well as black pudding and duck eggs.

RURYK FARE, Abernyre, by Dundee, 01828 687928, www.scottish-antiques.com This food hall cunningly tucked away at the Scottish Antiques and Arts Centre sells a varied range of Scottish and UK produce. The freezer section includes a well-kept larder of game including partridge, venison and pheasant as well as organic chicken.

EDINBURGH FARMERS' MARKET, Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh, www.scottishfarmersmarkets.co.uk

This weekly farmers' market has become an institution and a fantastic opportunity to buy some of Scotland's finest produce in one place direct from the supplier. Especially good – and you can tell from the queues around the block – are Phantassie vegetables, Kezie ostrich burgers and meats, Fletcher's venison (their mini game pies are divine) and the Arran cheese company. Chilli cheese makes a nice change from regular cheddar.

GOSFORD FARM SHOP, near Aberlady, East Lothian, 01875 871234 www.gosfordfarmshop.co.uk

A pleasant coastal drive away from Edinburgh, and the place to buy the Northwood wild boar, excellent as sausages or in a wild boar curry. There's also a good range of local seasonal vegetables and a caf on site, making it a good stop-off down the coast.
