Best of the Best: Fish and Chips

THE REAL FOOD CAFÉ, Main St, Tyndrum, 01838 400235 Fish and chip lover Alex Tinto has visited several chippies on our "Best of…" list and says of the RFC: "Still No 1 in my view as I have seen nothing better." Daniel Brittain-Catlin and Peter and Maureen Maybank are among its other big fans to have backed it recently.

PITTENWEEM FISH & CHIP BAR, 5 High St, Pittenweem, 01333 311258 Back at No 2 after this glowing reference from Hazel: "I started going to Pittenweem fish and chip shop as a child and neither the staff or decor have changed in the last 20 years – brilliant! Sitting at Pittenweem harbour eating fish and chips is much more peaceful than at Anstruther. We go at least once a month."

NORTH BERWICK FRY, 11 Quality St, North Berwick, 01620 893 246 Stays at No 3 after Paul MacMichael's praise in his Best Small Town entry, backing up nostalgic Donald Carmichael: "I remember NB Fry serving the best fish and chips when I was a boy in the 50s. I had some (recently) and quality is still the best."

TOWNHEAD CAF, High Street, Biggar, 01899 221001 Alex Tinto came back in with this: "Just shaded by Tyndrum as fish, chips and service first class" – so it's back as there have been lots of previous recommenders.

MHOR FISH, 75-77 Main Street, Callander, 01877 330 213 "First-class fish, chips and service but well behind Tyndrum and Biggar," says Alex Tinto, adding to steady support for MF in Perthshire.

L'AQUILA BIANCA, 17 Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, 0131-332 8433 Alex Tinto has been here too and puts it on a par with Mhor Fish – "I honestly cannot separate them," he says. Ian from Inverleith is another big supporter.

ALLANWATER CAF, Henderson Street, Bridge of Allan, 01786 833060 Returns to our list after a long break thanks to new recommendations, including this from John Quinn: "Have made several most enjoyable visits recently to the Allanwater while en route from Glasgow to Dundee. Their fish and chips are succulent and they also do a fish tea (fish and chips, pot of tea and home-made ice-cream) for 7.50. Ye cannae whack it!"

THE TAILEND, 14-15 Albert Place, Leith, Edinburgh, 0131-555 3577 Back thanks to more narrative from Alex Tinto – "I have seen adverse comments but can only judge on my experience, which was good." So despite the negatives, all the previous positives push it back in.

ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR, Shore Street, Anstruther, Fife, 01333 310518 Maureen Murphy loves it and said the Ritz couldn't do better, but she's had no new support.

• Also some support for Valente's in Auchtermuchty, Fife ("traditional fish and chip shop with generous portions and range of traditional sweeties"). Any more?
